The Adventures of #NORMASFANFOLLOW in South America Part IV

I woke up today to news that a volcano near Puerto Montt I visited in my tour of South America, has erupted.   I will share this part of my journey in subsequent publications, but I wanted to reach out to my friends in Chile to express my sincere sympathies and prayers for everyone affected.

th

Now, I must continue my reflections on my trip to South America!  Norma D had several relaxing days touring around Cape Horn and in the channels, fjords and “Glacier Alleys” that thread the tip of this magnificent country.   However, no good deed goes unpunished.   I must share the saga of the Norovirus aboard ship!   Fortunately, I did not suffer any problems, but hubs did.

th

First, I must commend Holland America for their diligence in handling the episode on board.  They had been giving passengers instructions as to prevention and reporting as we came on board and thereafter.  In addition, they had been serving the buffet(as opposed to letting passengers serve themselves) and constantly cleaning since the voyage started.  However, it only takes one person who did not was their hands after using the toilet to start an epidemic.

th3387LF6W

Thanks to the Hurculean efforts by our crew, an epidemic did not occur, only a few cases.  They washed everything with an antiviral cleaner.  I sat at the slot machine in the casino, lost, and got up to go lose at another one.  I looked back and they were cleaning the slot machine I just left!  People who reported symptoms were put in isolation and taken care of in their suite.  It was not like the nightmares depicted on the news. We were not able to tour Puerto Arenas, tho.

Fortunately, touring the Glaciers could be done by sitting outside on our balcony.   We traveled many miles through the Strait of Magellan, Cockburn (I don’t even want to think about this one) Channel, Beagle Channel (shaped like Snoopy), Glacier Alley (no dumpsters), rounding Cape Horn, Canal Sarmiento, and the Chilean Fjords.  Here are some of the beautiful pictures captured along the channels with my iPad tablet.

Not a soul in sight……Water like glass……Very Cold……..beautiful!

Along the way we made a stop at Ushuaia, Argentina  where we visited the Tierra Del Fuego (Land of Fire) National Park and the end of the Pan American Highway.  There we learned of the vicious killer Beavers of Ushuaia!

We climbed aboard our bus and was greeted by an Argentinian guide who sounded like Julia Child with a Spanish accent.

“Oh, I’ve cut the dickens out of my finger!”

He proceeded to tell us all about Ushuaia, but seemed to dwell on the Vicious Canadian Beavers in the Tierra Del Fuego National Park.   It seems that a few decades back the Ushuaians decided to start a Beaver Fur Industry in their fair town.  They imported (these are the exact words) “10 Beaver couples”to start off.   It was a disaster.  The beavers had no natural predators to control their growth and the fur they produced was of poor quality due to the difference in temperatures from Canada to Ushuaia in the winter.  Now they have about 180,000 (and climbing) beavers roaming the forest and destroying them.  Every time we came upon a deserted beaver dam, we heard the snide way Mr. Child said the word “BEAVER”!

Leave it to those damn beavers!

Leave it to those damn beavers!

My husband and I were rolling around the back seat of the bus laughing!

We came across the most Southern golf course and hubs was sad he did not bring his clubs!

We stopped at Ensenada Bay and Roca Lake to enjoy the view. image image image

Then we arrived at the end of the road, literally.  The end of the Pam American Highway which begins in Alaska.  Beyond this point there are no roads going South.  It is a desolate, beautiful place overlooking Lapataia Bay.

The last picture has another funny story.  A man named Dorian asked us to take his picture and when I did, I said “Tit for Tat…will you take ours?”  He leered at me and said “I like that Tit for Tat, I’d be pleased to take your picture.”  Hubs and I were certain he had a picture of a very handsome man somewhere in his attic, the opposite of Dorian Gray.

Senor Child thanked us effusively for visiting Ushuaia.  He bragged about an upcoming world skiing championship in the Winter.  I asked how many people they expected and he told me about 200,000.   I said,”Why don’t you give each visitor a vicious beaver to take home?”  (at which the entire bus burst into laughter)  Senor Child was rubbing his hands together and had a gleam in his eye!

BTW, along with Senor Child, Sam the Beaver Guide went with us.  A gang of Chilean “Kill the Beavers” Brigade attacked me for giving a Beaver my sandwich.  Sam saved me!

Next we invade the Falklands (oh wait, that was Argentina)!   Temps today are about 38 degrees Fahrenheit and winds are blowing at 30 mph (just under gale force winds).  Its slightly overcast.  Today’s adventure is a 4 x 4 trip out to the Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery.

Please remember, that several of our older cruisers are coming along, especially, Charlie who has this equipment to help him with the rigorous walk and climb to the penguin rookery!

Charlie is prepared with his resting spot if the going gets rough and it doubles as a cane! (Too bad it didn't convert into a shovel). Charlie is prepared with his resting spot if the going gets rough and it doubles as a cane! (Too bad it didn’t convert into a shovel).

We took a tender into the port and got on minibuses to go to the 4 X 4 area.   As we drove, we got a little history of The Falklands.  All together there are about 2,900 people who live on the island.   On April 2, 1982, Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands with 85,000 troops in an attempt to establish the sovereignty it had long claimed over them. The invaders immediately planted over 27K  land mines along the water.  On April 5th, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on June 14, 1982, returning the islands to British control. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities. I never knew what all the fuss was about at the time of the invasion, so it was interesting to hear about this difficult time on a very peaceful, self governed British territory.

As we drove out to the 4 X4’s we saw land mine deactivators working to remove the land mines after all that time.

Next we piled into 4 X 4’s and headed out to the penguins! Charlie (with seat/cane/shovel) is still hanging in there with us.

Friends, there is something they don’t tell you about seeing the penguins.  The entire area where they roam is covered in penguin poop.  At least 2 to 5 inches deep.  I’ve seen penguins before at the zoo in those fake white “snow” plateaus, with the water that is enclosed by glass so you can see how fast they swim!

Does anyone see any penguin poop?  No!  The poop has been vacuumed up before we arrive, which is the only civilized way to do things.  Do you think they’d have a penguin poop vacuum in the Falklands?  Noooooo !

Well, Charlie finally met his waterloo.  Took his seat/cane/ shovel and planted it right in the middle of the poop (that was on top of the soggy ground).  He immediately fell over like the guy on the tricycle on Laugh In!  Slow motion….. In stead of helping, I was paralyzed laughing as Charlie rolled around in the poop!  I felt awful!  (NOT) Charlie wasn’t hurt.

That night at dinner, I saw Charlie sitting all alone, because the tomato juice bath he took to kill the penguin poop smell, didn’t work!  They made him sit outside!

My waiter in the dining room was very competent that evening! I was well-served!

The Adventures of #NORMASFANFOLLOW in South America Part Deux

The weather is still balmy and I am lounging on my balcony!  It is difficult to believe that we have only covered two days of my 15 day odyssey around South America,   Our next stop will be Montevideo, Uruguay.  I am looking forward to a tour of the city and a winery.

However, I began to notice an elderly creep in the people on the ship.   I expected a mixture of people of varied ages because of the extensive outdoor activities in very cold weather.  I did not expect walkers, Hurry Canes, Canes with built in seats,  questions about where the nearest bathroom is and a lot of slow walking.   These were lined up outside the dining room.

Now Norma D is no spring chicken, but she can walk at a rapid pace and is able to leap tall buildings in a single bound (oh no that’s Superman).

Norma D: Oh Superman, I wish you could teach me how to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Superman: Yea, but you can leap on me in a single bound, and I’m pretty tall.

I thought I was back at work!   However, these older folks were ready for anything and were very active participants in all of the ship activities including the “Dancing with the Stars Final” and the zip line.  Amazingly, only a few landed on the floor!

I shook my head and looked forward to my winery tours (I always get my money’s worth on these tours)!

Montevideo reflects in its architecture and attitude,  the varied culture of its early settlers, who came from Spain, Portugal and Italy. We took a relaxing panoramic drive showing us the highlights of the city, including some of its historical landmarks like the Palacio Legislativo. The latter boasts a place among the three most beautiful Parliament buildings in the world.

We continue our  journey into the countryside, where we visited a traditional winery, Bouza Winery Boutique.  I like the name of this place (Bouza, aka booze, aka Norma’s Nectar of the Gods and Boutique aka Turban Store)!

It is located at the source of the Melilla Stream, is surrounded by native woods. The Bouza family has always believed that working on a small scale produces better wines, and they take great pride in attention to detail.  It is a lovely and welcoming place to visit.

Then we had two days at sea!    When I woke, I thought I had a horrible hangover because the room was moving.  Then I remembered I was on board a ship.  I looked out over the balcony and saw ocean spray hitting the glass on my balcony and the temperature had dropped at least 25 degrees!   We experienced 17 to 30 foot waves over the next few days.

Sam, Cait and the Flautist

Norma D was thinking about what I would do after #SamsFanFollow interviews stopped, since I discovered I really Iiked getting the vicarious experience of information having to do with Sam (and Cait for that matter) along with their interactions with fans.   If I based CoH popularity on it, about 25% of my success has been from these interviews. Apparently there are others who love vicarious thrills, too.  If you have seen all the hub bub that went on with Fritters in the Fanmily going to Paley Fest and the NYC Premiere and, my theory seems accurate.

God takes care of the idiots like me me in this world and I stumbled on an opportunity.  Right near the end of the #SamFanFollow there was some confusion about who was next and I saw a tweet from @flutist_kim, saying she got picked.  So I jumped on the DM, congratulated her and asked for an interview.  Kim replied immediately that she wasn’t picked for #SamFanFollow but would love an opportunity to advertise some charity work with which she’s been involved. This was my reaction:

Oh she wasn't picked for #SamFanFollow. Yippee she wants to use me for free fooking charity advertising! How do I get out of this?

Oh she wasn’t picked for #SamFanFollow. Yippee she wants to use me for free fooking charity advertising! How do I get out of this?

Norma D: Our interview came about as a result of a happy coincidence. I know why I want an interview (More information about Sam and Cait), but why do you want one?

Flutist Kim:  Because I’m a narcissist who likes the sound of my own voice(and seeing it in print – N.D.).

No seriously, I wanted a chance to do 2 things – talk about our favorite peeps – Cait and Sam and to spread the good word about what I’m doing for their charities. Some people may have noticed but myself and a few friends send them twitter love during the week. We do this not in the hopes of getting a response, but in the hope that not only will they see that they are loved and appreciated (for more than just their physical beauty) but to raise other people’s awareness of what these two amazing people are about.  Heres a few examples of TW Love:

Beauty Cait Love Catch CLASS gratitude Jamie and Claire my peak challenge perfect Sassenach Sugar

Flutist Kim:   San and Cait are always thinking of others with their charities, the arts, and literature. Sam is so devoted to the culture and history of Scotland, Cait is so worldly by virtue of being thrust onto the world modeling stage, away from family, as a teenager. Sam is too. They’re both wickedly smart and clever. A lot of times I fear, especially when an article like the Cosmo piece comes out, people see them as pretty faces.

I know I'm a pretty face, but what about you Cait?

I know I’m a pretty face, but what about you Cait?

Flutist Kim:Cait has had some amazing recognition for her work in the first half of Outlander, she’s there front and center. Sam’s work was just as good, the only thing was his work was so subtle and nuanced that in the face of Cait’s screen time or the BIGNESS of a character like BJR, that the details of Sam’s performance tend to get looked over. However, the second half of the season will, I believe, really show what he’s capable of to even the most casual observer.

image

NormaD: Tell me about the  work you are doing for Sam & Cait’s charities.

Flutist Kim:  When Sam announced #MyPeakChallenge, I had already planned a trip to Scotland including concerts. It just seemed a natural evolution to add fundraising to the program. Then the Caitriots announced their challenge for the weekend after MyPeak, so I bought their T shirt (I have quite the Outlander/Sam/Cait collection going on) and decided that what was good for the gander was good for the goose. I emailed both charities and asked them how best to go about it. They advised me to set up a Just Giving page.

https://www.justgiving.com/Kim-Hickey-mypeakchallenge

https://www.justgiving.com/Kim-Hickey-caitriotchallenge

Since then, I’ve created a Facebook event page to keep my friends and family updated https://www.facebook.com/events/867247113331473/

And completely updated my twitter profile and pics to reflect the charities and the program name – Old, New, Borrowed and Blue #ONBB. I have filmed a bunch of “in the practice room” videos, and will continue to do so, showing the process of preparing a program and other tidbits about music. I’ve had mini flyers printed up to hand out at the concerts I’ll be doing locally as both practice for the Scotland performances and to add to the fundraising – they have all the websites and my twitter handle on them.

The concerts in Scotland will be May 29 at Sutherlands Bar, An Gealbhan with Adhamh O’Broin (yes that Adhamh); the big concert with most of the premieres will be May 31 at Cottiers Theatre in Glasgows West End; June 4 will be a lunch time concert at the Scottish Music Centre and finally on June 12 at the Charles Rennie Macintosh Society will be a concert as part of the West End Festival. Each program will have at least one premiered. I’ve commissioned pieces from composer friends of mine. There are a couple pieces that are very special to me, to Scotland and to some of the people of Outlander.
Locally I’ll be performing at Bach Around the Clock – Trinity Episcopal’s http://www.trinitynola.com/page.aspx?pid=813 annual celebration of Bachs birthday with a 29 hour marathon of music, dance and readings. On April 12 I will perform parts of Old New Birrowed and Blue at the Trinity Artist series. And again on April 27 at the Marigny Opera House http://www.marignyoperahouse.org/
I’m also organizing concerts at a few other churches and the prestigious Newman School in uptown New Orleans. Both charities will be talked about, donations accepted and information disseminated to the attendees.  It’s taken a lot of planning, it’s been a lot of work and  taking a lot of time, but it’s so worth it.

Norma D:   What do you like the most about your fellow Fritters?

Flutist Kim:  I love how everybody is from everywhere and does different things, likes different things, the diversity, yet there’s predominately two common threads in my twitter and FB friends – music or outlander. I’ve made some fantastic friends because of outlander, and music. There’s a group of us who were talking one night who discovered that all of us had been touched by or had had been diagnosed with some form of cancer. And we all met because of outlander. And then #MyPeakChallenge just leveled that up – such an amazing thing Sam did, getting his fans fit and motivated and feeling better about themselves while raising money for an amazing charity; getting John and Gareth and Andy to donate their time to the cause, just so selfless. And then the #SamsFanFollow, which is why you did these interviews, that brought people together – if you didn’t already follow the SFF, you followed to live vicariously through them and to have a chance at it.

IMG_0067

Norma D:   So, I’m a newbie to Twitter and blogging.  How long have you been on TW and with the OL group?

Flutist Kim:  I think my profile says I’ve been on twitter since 2012. I resisted for a very long time, but finally gave in. I was hardcore for a while and had to read every tweet in my timeline. Gave that up after a short while.

A friend of mine was always posting about Outlander and this Jamie guy. Then I saw the commercials for the show on Starz. I bought the big compendium of the first 7 books on kindle, but didn’t read it for several months. Finally in June of last year, I told myself I better read it before August, which I did – I zoomed through all of them and MOBY. Stayed up late, sneaked in reading at work, everything you can imagine book addicts do. I was a little late to the party in that respect – I didn’t see a lot of the early twitter days of Sam and Cait or the casting or SDCC or any of that. But once I was in, I. WAS. IN.

Herself says, "I'm smiling, but none too happy it took so long for her to read the books!"

Herself says, “I’m smiling, but none too happy it took so long for her to read and buy the books!”

Norma D:  Have you had personal responses from Sam and Cait before your charity work?

Flutist Kim:  I’ve had a few faves and RTs from both of them. My first fave from Sam was right after the Gathering aired; he was teasing about who all was in the show as far as cameos. I asked if one was Adhamh – he replied to me, and that’s when he and I started conversing, we’ve become good friends, as have the drivers and others. Sam would never say who he was hinting at so I said something like ‘I’m gonna get on a plane and kick some ass” and that’s what he faved. Shows how cheeky he is. I was a wreck for hours after that. Since?    Sam and MyPeak have retweeted and responded to several of my posts, including my blogs about the process of preparing for this concert series; many fitness philosophies and strategies are applicable to music and that was and still is surprising to me, which has been a great lesson for me. I’ve also had responses from Fight Camp and Bear Strength.

And here I am so brokenhearted, paid to s~~t and only fahted! No Sam or Cait Tweets ever. Must not be very interesting or too snarky.

And here I am so brokenhearted, paid to s~~t and only fahted! No Sam or Cait Tweets ever. Must not be very interesting or too snarky.

Norma D:  Enough about me….Why are you so committed to these charities?

Flutist Kim: As I say in my JustGiving stories, I have had a lot of health problems in my life, from the moment I was born. For World Child Cancer, I can’t imagine not having had the treatment I received, more so for the fact that my conditions were essentially non life-threatening. For LLR, I’ve known people affected by blood cancers, and cancer has affected my family and myself – though my cancer was “only” skin cancer, it’s still a scary thing to be told. My life in hospitals and doctors’ offices informed who I became – some expected me to become a doctor, but instead I went into the front office end of healthcare. I’ve seen a lot of patients with diseases that could be treated and those whose diseases have not yet been resolved – bone cancer, MS, AIDS, ALS. So, between my personal experience as a patient and my experience on the other side of the counter, I have empathy for those who are looking at a diagnosis for which the outcome is unknown.

Norma D:     It can be difficult to know what to do for people dealing with these problems.   Has the OL Fanmily made a difference in your life?

Flutist Kim:There is a core group of people who are always there if/when I need them. We make each other laugh and we virtually hug each other when someone is crying or feeling bad. I would feel bereft without them. All because of Outlander.

thJIYGEJGF

Norma D:  Any advice for the fandom?

Flutist Kim:  Be nice. If you can’t be nice, be quiet. If you can’t be quiet, be prepared to be ignored. Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat.

It is a pleasure to have had the opportunity to interview Kim, even if it was an accident!

Its nice to know there are Fritters who are talented and trying to make a difference in the world.

The Adventures of #NORMASFANFOLLOW in South America

Bucket Lists can help you focus and can narrow down a few of the many options we have in our life.  No one can have everything, so it’s a good idea to select those that are most important.  One thing on mine is to travel to every continent in the world.   Each of these trips have proven to be exciting and often difficult.  This last trip to sail around the southernmost tip of South America, fit that description to a tee!

Now, Norma D is no greenhorn when it comes to travel nor am I opposed to roughing it.  In addition I am very scientific about what I pack, what goes in my carry-on, what goes in regular luggage, location of excursions, weather on the days we are there, and how much I pack.    It’s not that I’m anal retentive. It is like solving a puzzle for me to put together outfits, so I look glamourous for every occasion while wearing each piece of clothing at least 3 times.  Colorful turbans do a lot for my costumes.  I start with an excel spreadsheet, but I do not have OCD.  I am PREPARED!  I bring my own booze!

CAVUWQ0UIAIkExx

@beulahcrusoe exclusive

Fortunately, I find humor in most situations, so these experiences are fun to share.  This trip held many firsts that had my head spinning a bit!  We flew to Atlanta and waited 4 hours to board our flight to Buenos Aires (BA).  I met the pilot and he promised me a smooth ride (no pun intended).

I insist on at least two people in my cockpit and I would be delighted to include Norma D!

I insist on at least two people in my cockpit and I would be delighted to include Norma D!

The BA leg of the flight would prove to last 10 hours, so I packed my carry-on accordingly:

  • Medicine, including Band-Aids, Neosporin, Ibuprofen, Tums, Chap Stick, eye drops, cough drops, automatic air sanitizer.
  • Sundries, including hand lotion, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, wipes, nail clippers, tweezers, scissors, safety pins, lipstick, comb, blush and highlighter.
  • Inflatable lumbar pillow, Neck Rest, travel blanket, eye mask, and folding foot rest (short people’s feet do not touch the floor)
  • I-Pad, earphones, charger.
  • ID, Passport, Charge Cards, Rosary, Tickets and Money.
  • Fine Jewelry.

I reiterate, I do not have OCD!

So, I board the plane and  get into my 4’ x 4’ seat space.  I inflate my pillow, put my bags of equipment in every conceivable spot I can tuck something, unfold my footrest, unfold my blanket, plug in my charger,  put I-pad in seat pocket with ear plugs attached, put my carry on and purse in the overhead compartment, buckle my seat belt, and sit back ready for flight.  But I do not have OCD.

Then the pilot announces, “During baggage loading the airplane was damaged and we will be unable to repair it quickly enough for this plane to leave.  We will be transferring all passengers to another plane and will be delayed two more hours.”

044678-atsb

The rear wheels collapsed under the strain of so much luggage with the initials N.D.

Several thoughts passed through my mind:

  • “Fook! Fook! Fook! S–t! S–t! S–t!”
  • “And they try to tell us they are gentle with our luggage. Someone threw the bags so hard, the rear wheels collapsed!”
  • “I’ll never find where I put all my crap!”
  • “Thank God I’m not flying in a broken plane!”
  • “I have now been up over 14 hours and my face is wrinkling as we speak.”
  • “Why do they have a spare airplane lying around, unless it is broken too?”
  • “Thank goodness I didn’t put my Snoopy pilot hat, goggles and scarf on.

th

Finally, we get on the new plane.  The handsome pilot comforts me.

We arrive 10 hours later in Buenos Aires, and are loaded into a bus to go to the ship.  However, since there are people still disembarking from the previous sailing, we have to go on a tour of the city to kill time.  I have been up over 26 hours and we are touring in a bus.  I’m like a cranky baby taking a car ride with my exhausted parents.  I fall asleep immediately and missed all of the tour.

As I board the ship, a smiling girl asks if I want my picture taken.   I say, “Are you sh–ting me?  I have been awake now for 28 hours and I have to be at a fooking tango show in 5 hours!  Posing for a picture would be like putting sticks under my finger nails! ” Then she gave me a whole bottle of champagne and said, “Here, drink this!”   I hugged her and proceeded to get snockered.

Then we get to the Tango Show……it was breathtaking and I had never seen so many variations on the “dance of love”.   The 8 dancers moved as one, with exact kicks and turns that looked like the workings of a clock.   I was in love with the dance!    I drank wine, ate tapas, and tapped my foot.  My favorite tango was a variation on Roxanne from Baz Luhrman’s “Moulin Rouge”.

The man in the top hat was my tango partner.

All right fellows, I've got my partner picked out! Norma D! and a 1-2-3! Brilliant!

The next day we went on another tour of Buenos Aires and went to the tomb of Eva Peron.  We all held hands and sang, “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” from Evita.

We returned to the ship and had to participate in the life boat drills.  Our captain insisted!

This is an example of the one man-one woman wraparound jump into the life raft. Good aim is essential.

I just love a captain with white hair. Where have I seen him before? Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Titanic? So familiar.

I so love a sailing ship in stead of the fancy cruise ships! Just as soon as we get out of this glacier, we’ll be able to leave!
